About This Photograph.

The eye contact was essential.
Digging through more than 3,000 shots from fashion week takes time. Time that we don't really have to be honest. And mostly this is my burden due to our strict standards as to which shots qualify as "photographs" (that to me is less than 10%). Afterwards, I have to painstakingly go through each of those photographs and decide which of those I feel come across artistic enough to meet "URBAN ART BY NURI" standards. Not many. My standards for fashion and art are very high, thanks to my days of being around the best at Neiman Marcus, where I worked for seven years in various capacities.
In order for a photo to speak to me as art there has to be a certain element to it. Arguably, one cannot really describe it, because it truly is just a gut feeling. This photo compelled me to write about because it jumped out at me. The minute the model stared me down, I knew art was about to be made. Frankly, I am not the one to chase a shot unless I am shooting clouds or nature. I simply let the shots come to me in this specific scenario, a fashion show. Alla was with me this night at Couture Fashion Week. Our seating was horrible on the media riser on the right hand side (model's left hand side). And Alla herself can attest that this side of the riser does not get much love from the models for some reason; Saturday was the absolute worst day, to many photographer's frustration on that side of the stage. That pretty much sums up the story behind this photo and why it is VERY special to me.

Check out her eye contact. The model’s body language. The model herself truly deserves high credit for her involvement in the making of this photograph. When I got the eye contact, my goal was to isolate her as much as possible from the other distracting elements in the venue. Once I minimized the the impact of the distracting elements, I capitalized on the moment to immortalize this instance of time. Added a vignette filter to further isolate her from the few people in the background and VOILA!!! dramatic interpretation of a beautiful design by Sheri Autry Couture from the SS19 Collection "A Midsummer Night's Dream". This photo both captivates and encapsulates the essence and the name of the collection in one photograph. This is how you tell a story during Fashion Week. While taking catalog photos has its time and place, and I do have to shoot like the other photogs when the designer is paying me to shoot. But when I am here to freestyle and tell you a story this is what I am coming at you with.
