Once a year, the shores of Coney Island transform into a fantastical underwater world where mermaids, sea captains, pirates, and sea creatures come alive in the famous Mermaid Parade! The 2023 Mermaid Parade was nothing short of spectacular, filled with shimmering scales, outrageous costumes, and a tidal wave of creativity. This year’s theme, “Aquatic Extravaganza,” invited all forms of marine-inspired magic, from the mythical to the downright hilarious.

A Sea of Costumes
The parade opened with a flourish as mermaids of every color sashayed down Surf Avenue, donning seashell crowns, iridescent scales, and plenty of glitter. Some went for classic mermaid elegance with pearls and flowing fins, while others embraced avant-garde styles, incorporating elements like punk rock, Victorian steampunk, and even a little dark gothic edge. Imagine Ursula carrying her own portrait like an undersea Mona Lisa and glamorous sirens adorned in everything from pirate hats to spiked seashell bras. Every outfit was an artistic tribute to life under the waves.

Pirates, Scallywags, and the Spirit of Adventure
No mermaid parade would be complete without a few pirates, and the 2023 gathering had a colorful cast of swashbucklers, eyepatch-wearing rogues, and buccaneers ready to plunder the fun. Laughs echoed down the streets as costumed revelers channeled their inner Jack Sparrow, complete with oversized hats, bandanas, and, of course, plastic swords. Some pirates even came prepared with treasure chests filled with goodies for the crowd, adding a touch of playfulness and charm to the day’s festivities.
Poseidon’s Army on Wheels
An eco-friendly highlight of the parade was the arrival of Poseidon’s army on bikes and scooters decked out with bubbles, netting, and LED lights, evoking the mysteries of the deep sea.
