We’re excited to announce our new Tony Gum exhibition, Milked in Africa, opening on June 10th. Tony Gum (b. 1995) first rose to prominence for Black Coca-Cola, a series of self-portraits that earned her a major following in her native South Africa and beyond. In her new series, Gum once again uses herself as both muse and canvas to explore contemporary narratives of exploitation and commercialization, and to emphasize the role that heritage and culture play in capturing African art history.
Her bold portraits draw on the rich visual language of fashion editorials, using costumes and props to deliver incisive, relevant social commentary. Don't miss it.
